Interview with... Paolo La Cava - Alitalia's Flight Operations Officer

Also in consideration of the recent operations meetings, has the synergism between Alitalia and ENAV contributed to improve the Airline's flight efficiency in terms of lower fuel, NM and CO2, associated with the network growth?
Seamlessly with the approach of previous years, specific improvements were made in 2015 in the aviation system, which resulted in more than 300 metric tonnes reduction in CO2 emissions from Alitalia flights, corresponding to 100 tonnes of fuel, as a result of the reduced length of planned routes. We are also working on other flight-efficiency aspects, such as reducing holding times on arrival at Fiumicino in the event of airport-construction works or unfavourable weather conditions. More generally speaking,  we are also taking part in important initiatives such as the SESAR "Free Solutions" project with good results.

Will the ongoing collaboration between the operational units of both companies contribute to meet Alitalia's operational requirements?
Air transport is a complex system with processes based on several types of information. Of course, information is optimised to continuously improve the services offered to travellers by Air Navigation Service Providers and Airlines together with Airport Handlers in an extremely competitive context, where the maximum level of safety needs to be ensured. Therefore, over and above the use of sophisticated information systems, the interaction between the above organisations is instrumental in the optimal management of all technical aspects in order to come to the best possible decisions, each within its own scope of responsibilities.

To what extent does the ability of a service provider to ensure flight efficiency and predictability (i.e. flights matching the flight plan) affect the planning choices of an Airline?

For both ENAV and Alitalia, 'sold quality' tends to match 'purchased quality' to a very high extent. When an Airline chooses a Service Provider, it considers factors such as overflight cost - which is unfortunately a bit high for Italy and therefore it is indeed more economical to fly over less costly neighbouring countries - or the number of delays due to capacity congestion. In the latter case, ENAV provides an excellent service with a very low number of average en-route delays in Europe.

Security is today a particularly sensitive topic. How is Alitalia coping with it?

Both Safety and Security will be among Alitalia's priorities. Today Alitalia takes pride in its top level internal security service, which is among the best in the industry and also relies on the contributions of our partners. Today we synergetically share information with eight airlines of our group for risk analysis and operational decision making.

What are the strengths of Alitalia's operational framework following its alliance with Etihad Airways?

In addition to the security benefits described above, our collaboration with Etihad Airways and our equity partners has implied a better bargaining capacity at group level, with a significant improvement of the contractual terms offered by our suppliers.
Together with our partners we have instituted a number of technical panels, which study full-scope synergies to improve service, reduce costs and achieve flight efficiency.
Synergism is also achieved in joint-training and internship programmes.
This form of collaboration also implies a better exposure of our colleagues worldwide with an expansion of the networking capacity.
In the IT sector, another fundamental element of synergism is the implementation of an IPAD platform, as Electronic Flight Bag for our crews.
