Traffic Complexity Tool (TCT)

Traffic Complexity Tool provides automatic suggestion for optimized air space configurations increasing air space capacity and improving operational efficiency.
The Local Traffic Complexity Tool makes easier for operators to perform analyses across their air space resources. The tool exchanges heterogenous information with several systems (flight data, roster/staff information, weather and airspace event data) to provide operators with consistent and up-to-date scenario for the airspace of interest. It allows simulations to quickly identify solutions either for bottlenecks or to evaluate impact of constraints. For post-operations, recording and playback facilities are available to support both training and demonstration purposes.

The Traffic Complexity Tool helps operators and managers to perform quick and effective analysis during their shift. The tool performs traffic monitoring against available capacity and runs what-if analyses prompting users with the operational impact of these recommendations. The operators always keep focus and awareness on key points avoiding time-consuming tasks.

The main features are:

  • Traffic monitoring, that for any available sector configuration, computes traffic demand and provides graphs on active and available configurations. This enables ACC staff to determine the optimal configuration schedule. FMP staff are warned in case of capacity shortfall and can determine whether a capacity measure is enough, or a STAM/Regulation is ultimately necessary.

  • Traffic Complexity, computed to take into contributions to controllers’ workload in terms of the number of flight interactions (horizontal, vertical, speed) together with raw counts (entry, occupancy).

  • Intruder Detection of flight not expected to fly within a sector according to last valid flight plan is performed. This provides FMP staff with clear and quick information about the actual situation with respect to agreed plans. Early detection of intruders enables the FMP staff to early coordinate with the ACC staff.

  • Sector configuration facilities support ACC roles to manually apply selected sector configurations, probe specific configurations and create new ones. Moreover, the tool offers ACC staff a set of solutions that considers staff availability and expected traffic.

  • Traffic what-if analyses are performed to suggests action on flights, eventually, combined with capacity measures.

  • Impact analysis of events such as airspace reservations, significant weather and staff assignments allow users to assess impacted sectors, traffic flows and individual flights.

  • Replay mode can be used to replay past situations for training purposes or for historical investigations of past scenarios.

The tool can be connected to Eurocontrol NM systems via B2B interface. Moreover, it can also interface LARA system to preliminary evaluate the impact of FUA events and coordinate with ASM office. The main interfaces also include local FDP systems for active flights, NOTAM system for SIGMET/NOTAM and Roster system to retrieve staff allocation scheme.

Traffic Complexity Tool helps our Customers in making their everyday job more effective. Working on short term problems requires quick and accurate data to support decision making.

It improves operator’s daily tasks allowing them to put their effort and their knowledge on the “right stuff at the right moment".This tool allows operators to improve the identification of optimal sector configuration thus preventing unnecessary actions on traffic. The detection of unexpected traffic early in advance helps acting promptly also coordinating with adjacent ACCs. Finally, the tool improves the way traffic surplus can be safely handled thus enhancing coordination with NM.
