European Procurement Manager Easy Jet Airlane Company

[Cleared n°1 - Year VIII January 2011]

Enzo Zangrilli was born in Mirano (near Venice) on the 7th of May 1970. After graduating from a classical lyceum and University of Bologna where he studied jurisprudence he worked abroad for over a decade working in contracts and technical tender management for large multinational companies, such as the Pilkington group, IMERYS and ABB. As European Procurement Manager for EasyJet Enzo Zangrilli is responsible for handling contracts, the procurement of airport services and the economic regulation of the English company in Italy, France, North Africa, Scandinavia and Eastern Europe.

What are the main factors that determine price politics for low-cost carriers?
First of all we must consider the question in terms of a quick analysis of the European situation regarding "short-haul" or medium range flights. Never before has the European market been so aggressive and crowded.
With this in mind factors such as competition on specific routes, the market demand, and of course, a careful analysis of airport costs are the key factors which determine commercial choices for both low-cost and traditional airlines.
It is also important to note how the traditional airlines are also lowering their average rates as a result of the competition from the low-cost carriers, which benefits the consumers.

Low - cost carriers have taken a significant share of the market from the national airlines in recent years, what are the competition rules in the air transport industry?
Well it is true there has been a lot of growth. Proof of this is the situation in Italy; if we look at the Italian market closely we gain a good understanding of how much low-cost airlines have penetrated the market in an extraordinary way.  In we are talking about around 40% of the total number of passengers carried, a percentage which is getting close to the levels seen in England and Spain. How has this been possible? It has come as a result of indefatigable investment in facilities, personnel and infrastructure by the low-cost airlines. In this regard the European slot protection regulations (which are soon to expire fortunately) and the debatable extension of "use it or lose it" rule have not helped those companies whose objective in recent years was to grow. It is not always easy to understand the rules of the game in Italy, especially for those who are entering the Italian market. However it must be said that the institutions and institutional Authority in charge of Civil Aviation regulations have recently opened far more efficient communication channels.

What is your involvement in the airport cooperative decision making and what do you think of ENAV's activities in promoting the process in Italian airports?
Firstly ENAV has been farsighted, because they have understood the importance of sharing and evaluating information together, from technical information to discussion panels and sharing European legislative trends regarding Air Traffic Control, to which easyJet has adhered with dedication and enthusiasm over the last two years. When you work hard the results are clear to see. For example Italy has not been affected by negative phenomena like flight disruptions which have occurred in Spain and Greece, and the serious financial effect they have had on airliners and the damage they have done to the countries' flight control systems.

What do you think of the services ENAV offers, keeping in mind the optimization of the ATM services and the involvement of vehicles in the customer-satisfaction campaign? In what way has our service differentiated itself?
I would like to focus on one aspect for a moment: the "personalization" of the service. Following up questionnaires on customer-satisfaction with direct and focused contact on specific aspects of the feedback service, like ENAV does, proves that to reach such levels of quality an extra step must be taken, a step which goes past the simple fulfilling of company obligations.
