Satellite approaches for Genoa airport

ENAV introduces innovative procedures that will allow an increase in airport operations, with a reduction in waiting times and fuel consumption

Genoa, 18 September 2020 - Required navigation performance (RNP) allow aircraft to follow an extremely precise path between points in space identified using satellite navigation systems.

Thanks to the reliability and precision of this technology, the new routes ensure optimal management of traffic flows. On 10 September ENAV published the RNP approach procedure for runway 28 designed for the Genoa airport. From next 8 October the procedure for runway 10 will then be operational. These innovative satellite procedures (based on GPS and EGNOS) join the existing conventional ones, based on ground stations.

Thanks to the new procedures, the Genoa Airport will be able to enjoy an increase in operations in certain circumstances.

The choice to land in one direction or the other of the runway mainly derives from the current weather conditions. Currently, in the event of an easterly wind, arriving and departing traffic flows may be subject to reductions linked to the need to ensure separation between aircraft.

Thanks to the new satellite procedures, these limitations, which are particularly penalizing at peak traffic times, will disappear. This will mean a greater efficiency, with a reduction in flight times and any waiting time for both arriving and departing aircraft. Effects that will also bring environmental benefits with them: by reducing average flight times and waiting times on the ground, fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions will consequently be reduced.

Both new procedures were tested in flight thanks to the use of ENAV Flight Inspection fleet, which uses four modern Piaggio 180 Avanti II aircraft, produced in Liguria by Piaggio Aerospace.

The procedure was implemented as part of the ECARO and co-funded by the GSA (Global Navigation Satellite Systems Agency).

ENAV CEO Paolo Simioni said: " Investments in innovative technologies represent a strategic asset to ensure safety, efficiency and continuity of the service . Genoa represents a fundamental port of call for the Italian logistics system. We are convinced that thanks to this implementation there will be immediate benefits for the area and for all related industries . The excellent coordination with the management company and with the relevant bodies has guaranteed an excellent result and on schedule".
