Interview with... Mauro Cipollini - CEO of Techno Sky

CEO of Techno Sky

[Cleared n°7 - Year VIII July - August 2011]

After graduating in Electronic Engineering, he starts his professional career working in the Information Technology sector, in Italy and in Europe. He worked for Hewlett-Packard for 15 years and at that time he held different eminent positions in charge of the sales and marketing sectors for important clients.  In November 1991, he becomes Hewlett-Packard's European Director of the Integrated Systems division, whose mission is to plan and create special systems for significant European Manufacturing companies. In this position, he reports directly to the division's head offices, based in Sunnyvale, California. He works abroad for five years and then returns to Italy. He is in charge of the Italian branch of Autodesk, a leading software company for automated planning for three years.  He then becomes CEO of 3Com Italia, a leading company specialised in the provision of data communication systems, as well as a member of the 3Com Europe's European Leadership Team. He has been the CEO of Epiclink (an Italian new business that provides outsourcing services to medium and large Italian companies) since February 2001, of which he is one of the founders and contributors in making the company grow, in line with the approved business plan established by founding members. Since December 2003, he has been the CEO of Telindus S.p.A., the Italian branch of System Integrator Europe, a leading company that plans highly reliable and safe data communication networks for Italian medium and large companies.  He has been the CEO of Techno Sky since February 2011.

You were appointed Techno Sky's CEO in 2011.  What are your impressions on the Company you are now in charge of?
I have been in charge of this company for a few months.  My knowledge of the company is better defined now and I am happy to confirm my first impressions.  I find that very talented professionals work for Techno Sky.  These people work well with their colleagues at ENAV, with whom they join efforts towards the provision of a safe air transport system. When the new Control Tower was launched at Venezia Airport, I was delighted to hear that the company was praised for a job well done. ENAV's top management publicly expressed their appreciation and this is not to be taken for granted but should be considered an incentive.

Which areas do you think Techno Sky should improve and which capacities should the Company still be working on?
At present, we are working on updating the three-year plan which considers that performances should be continuously improved compared to the traditional upkeep of ENAV's technical infrastructures, as well as identify complementary areas in related markets.  We have produced an adequate offer and we are waiting to discuss economic details concerning the upkeep of radar equipment for non ATC areas.  In my opinion, the field in which the Company should acquire new skills and develop new competences is software. The potential development of software solutions will be an important part of the Techno Sky future offer: currently we have a first product for meteorology, that has been developed in-house, which has been installed and is currently in the operational validation phase.  Over time, we shall consider the opportunity to extend our competences and skills in additional sectors.

What is your opinion concerning the role of companies specialised in the maintenance of ATM equipment, in light of changes required by future European projects?
Our vision is to make sure that Techno Sky becomes a true centre of competence in hardware and software ATC systems, in order to enable ENAV to deal with any requirements established by future laws and regulations issued by European bodies, with the awareness that we know what needs to be done in-house. At present, we are just scratching the surface of European projects, but we would like to become one of the reference points of the future, providing a competent and complete offer.  It is an ambitious plan but it can be done.

In your opinion, which are the fundamental concepts behind a successful company?
I think that key elements for a successful company are: teamwork, a sense of urgency and motivation to do a good job. These concepts can be easily implemented and result in an important competitive advantage that really makes the difference. If departments work well together, if people consider each other's problems as their own problem, if they understand that if a job is properly done first time round it won't need to be done again, this should be the normal way for people to perform their daily tasks. I'm positive that I will be able to rely on everybody to make Techno Sky become a Company where everyone strives to work for.
