ENAV WINS INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION FOR THE ENVIRONMENT AWARDED THE ROUTE ROME-MILAN-ROME

Within the World Summit of CANSO - the organization of all providers of air navigation services - that  closed the 26th of June in Rome, CEO Massimo Garbini  received in that day a special reward for the environmental policies undertaken in recent years by ENAV. In representation of the over 140 CEOs arrived in Italy from 69 countries on 5 continents, CANSO Environment Workgroup  presented the award for the actions undertaken by ENAV to reduce fuel consumption by aircraft on the route joining Rome with Milan.

Beyond raising the routes, additional procedures have been implemented for Fiumicino-Linate route arrivals and departures to allow dedicated traffic flows, thus reducing flight times and harmful emissions by aircraft. All this results in an annual reduction of about 2 million kg of CO2. Indeed, works on the Rome-Milan so-called"Shuttle Route" (over 10 thousand meters above sea-level) are part of a reconfiguration plan of the Italian airspace routes, called Flight Efficiency Plan and started in 2008 by ENAV, which in 2011 alone helped carriers to save 42,500 tons of fuel and 9,265,000 km, and reducing CO2 emissions of 134,000 tons. During the period 2008/2011 airlines saved a total of 98,000 tons of fuel, worth about 60 million euros."Air traffic control - said ENAV CEO Garbini - plays a key role in helping to reduce operational costs and mitigate the environmental impact of aviation. ENAV has always been studying and working on solutions that contribute to fly safely and efficiently. I take this opportunity to thank the airlines, notably Alitalia, for giving us the necessary support in this operation which brings benefits to all in environmental, but also in economic terms." With ENAV, Italy has been one of the first countries to adopt these complex procedures, also thanks to investments made in systems and training of operating personnel.
