ENAV organises and designs airspace, defining the infrastructure of air routes so that all airspace users, whether civilian or military, private or commercial, can fly safely, punctually, economically and in an environmentally friendly way.
By means of their internal structure, Enav supervises the establishment, maintenance and constant updating of:
• departure and arrival procedures from/to Italian airports, keeping in mind natural and artificial territorial morphology (obstacles), using conventional methods (land based radio assistance)as well as non-conventional methods based on RNAV in accordance with the PBN (Performance Based Navigation) concept
• a routing system to channel air traffic flows in Italian airspace, aligned with flight procedures and the existing flight network beyond national borders
• airspace volume depending on the ATS service provided, its operational context and utilisation by other users
In addition to its design related activity, ENAV works in continuous coordination with civil (public and private) and military entities to promote the flexible use of airspace. This ensures that multiple users can operate side by side in the same space, despite their different objectives and types of air transport, such as military exercises, commercial air transport, special sporting events, safety exercises and the maintenance of public order.
ENAV is also involved “in-field” in all activities that are closely linked to in-flight safety, topographical surveying and monitoring, with the purpose of collecting and updating information regarding land geography and all the artificial and natural elements that could be obstacles to air navigation. This important databank is an essential piece in the design of flight procedures and air routes, and is included in aeronautical maps when deemed relevant as per national and international norms.
All ATM infrastructure design activity carried out by ENAV follows the highest standards defined by the international organisations (ICAO, EUROCONTROL, etc.), of which Enav is a member, with the continuing aim of innovating processes, technologies and training and updating methods for professional personnel involved in Airspace Design.
