GNSS - Global Navigation Satellite System

GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) is the worldwide navigation system based on the American GPS (Global Positioning System), on the Russian GLONASS (Global Navigation Satellite System) and on the European Galileo system presently under development.

In fact, in the late 1980s a special ICAO Committee (Future Air Navigation System – FANS) acknowledged that GPS required appropriate functional augmentations in order to meet the needs of civil aviation, such as guaranteeing the availability of information provided by satellites.

ENAV, working together with many partners and under the sponsorship of international organizations, is committed to turning the considerable work done with ICAO’s FANS into reality.

THE REGIONAL EUROPEAN GNSS SYSTEM (EGNOS) AND THE ROLE OF ENAV:

  • ENAV has contributed from the outset to the development and implementation of the European Geostationary Navigation & Overlay Service (EGNOS) which will ensure uniform near CAT I ILS performance, i.e. in airports that up to now were equipped with limited infrastructures;
  • ENAV is a shareholder of the EGNOS System Service Provider (ESSP), which will be certified according to the Single European Sky rules, in order to provide navigational services to the aeronautical community as well as to other user categories;
  • ENAV has implemented one of the four EGNOS Mission Control Centers (MCC) at the Roma ACC;
  • In coordination with the European Commission and the European Space Agency, ENAV is pursuing objectives aimed at demonstrating the possible extension of the EGNOS service to the eastern Mediterranean area (MIDAN project, METIS, etc.);
  • ENAV has considerably contributed to the activities of EUROCONTROL in order to ensure the safety of GNSS operations and to render them operational.

THE LOCAL GNSS SYSTEM (GBAS):

  • ENAV installed an experimental Ground Based Augmentation Service (GBAS) station at Palermo airport, suitable for CAT I operations, in compliance with ICAO regulations;
  • ENAV is evaluating the use of GBAS information directed at the ADS B surveillance application, supplementing the approach radar presently used at Palermo airport;
  • The use of the GBAS system for EGNOS CAT II and CAT III operations is expected to start in 2015.
