CRISTAL MED Phase 1 (2005-2006)

Phase 1 of CRISTAL MED, developed from 2005 to 2006, was wholly financed by EUROCONTROL. ENAV acted as coordinator of an ANSP (Air Navigation Service Provider) Consortium, formed by DSNA (France), HCAA (Greece), MATS (Malta) and DCAC (Cyprus), to which the project activities were assigned. The studies conducted in the first phase have enabled us to define the requisites for the validation activities.

Three different operational scenarios have been defined in Italy:

  • Caraffa di Catanzaro for ADS-B RAD;
  • Alghero for ADS-B NRA;
  • Napoli Capodichino for ADS-B APT.

For each scenario the Consortium has drawn up the OSED (Operational Service and Environment Description) describing the potential benefits deriving from the introduction of ADS-B technology in the areas considered.

The requisites for the platform, overall architecture and the validation plans for each scenario selected have been drawn up.

In the light of the promising results obtained, EUROCONTROL has approved the continuation of the technical aspects and the acquisition of sufficient familiarity by air traffic control personnel with the surveillance information presented.
